Windows Reports Damaged or Missing System Files

Use this procedure when Windows reports system-file corruption or support specifically asks you to repair Windows components.

  1. Save your work.

  2. Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

  3. Run the following commands one at a time, waiting for each to finish:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

sfc /scannow

  1. Keep the computer connected to the internet while DISM runs.

  2. Restart the computer after the commands finish.

If a command reports an error, record the message and contact support. Do not delete Windows system files or download replacement system files from third-party websites.
